Mr. George William Douglas

George William Douglas, 84, of Chateaugay, NY, died May 29, 2016 at the Alice Center, Malone, NY after several months of battling diabetes and heart related illnesses. Born in Chateaugay on March 10, 1932, he was the son of Frank and Anna (Granger) Douglas who predeceased him. George married Rose Marie Dupree on September 24, 1955 in Chateaugay and they shared 57 years together before her passing in July of 2013. He was a graduate of Chateaugay High School and a veteran of the Korean War. He worked at Alcoa in Massena, BOCES of Franklin, Essex, and Hamilton counties, the Franklin County Fairgrounds, and delivered meals for the Burke Adult Center. His greatest passion, however, was as a farmer for 30 years raising his family with Rose on the Douglas Homestead where they lived for 55 years. George was a member of the American Legion Post 875 of Chateaugay and Knights of Columbus 469 Wadhams Council of Chateaugay. He also enjoyed weekly card games, daily lunch at the adult center, casual games of golf, bird watching, and especially time with his family. George is survived by five children and their spouses, Jay and Melanie Douglas of Chateaugay, Cindy and Kevin Gale of Moira, Lynn and Jim Harrigan of Chateaugay, Cheryl Douglas and her partner John Cook of Malone and David Douglas of Malone; five grandchildren, Courtney and Eric Weaver, Nicholas and Angela Mackey, Jacob Gale, Danielle Dumas and her fiancé Tyler Matthews, and Adam Dumas; three great-grandchildren, Madison Weaver, Zachary Weaver, and Brynlei Gale; a sister, Joanne Douglas of North Carolina; four sisters-in-law, Marcia Ashline of Mooers, NY, Nancy Ashline of Chateaugay, Debbie and Randy Davis of Florida, and Manya Dupree of Churubusco, NY. He was also predeceased by a brother, Gerald Douglas. Calling hours will be held at the Chateaugay Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 from 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 in St. Patrick's Church with Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Burial will follow mass and take place at Eastside Cemetery, Chateaugay. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Hospice of the North Country or the Burke Adult Center.
