Mr. John "Jack" R. McCormick

John R. McCormick, son of Edmund and Leona McCormick and better known as Jack, passed away peacefully surrounded by people who loved him, on August 18th, 2026. Jack was born in Pittsfield, MA on August 10, 1938, and moved to Chateaugay when he was 6 ½ years old. It was here, while growing up on the farm, he learned the value of hard work, accomplishments, and an understanding and acceptance of what nature brings. Jack graduated from Chateaugay Central School (CCS) in 1956, took post-graduate classes in 1957, and was a member of the inaugural class of the Miner Institute in Chazy, NY. Ready to see the world, Jack joined the Air Force in 1960, and was stationed in Texas, Illinois, Maine and Korea, before his honorable discharge in 1964. A lover of anything with a motor, Jack bought his first backhoe in 1967, successfully operating an excavation business for over 50 years, in addition to his 35-year career as a rural letter carrier. His Irish charm endeared him to most he met, including his wife of 58 years, Judith Campbell. His wit and eternal good nature made him an excellent mail carrier, business owner, board and committee member, friend and family patriarch. Jack was dedicated to community service, spending 39 years as a member on the CCS School board, as well as serving on the Better Health Organization, St Patrick’s Parish Council, The Franklin County Housing Committee and the Teen Center. While he did not get out and about as much in his later years, he would always ask Judy to tell people he knew, “Hi”, from him, and with a big smile, he would cheerily accept the good wishes offered by others. Jack loved people and life. This love for life sped his recovery from quintuple bypass surgery in 2002 and kept his spirits high following a major stroke in 2016. He still started every day with a smile and this sweet, gentle soul was always grateful to God and others. He was a role model for unconditional love of family, a strong work ethic, and an unfailing sense of humor. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy, and their three children (and partners) Lisa Comella, Mark and Kismet McCormick, and Tara McCormick and Henry Marsden. This is in addition to his granddaughters Alena Comella Gahm (Chris), Mollie Comella (Cole) and step-grandchildren Brett Bush (Chelsey), Anthony Bush (Harley), Shelby Bush (Sabrina) and six step-great-grandchildren. Jack has always been proud of his family and possessed unconditional love for all of them, and would do anything for any of them. In addition, he leaves behind his brother, Arthur (Evelyn) McCormick, Kay Manley (Bob), and sister-in-law Cindy McCormick, brothers-in-law Patrick Campbell (Beverly), Michael Campbell (Joanne), Jamie Campbell (Nancy) and sister-in-law, Kay Pranis as well as 23 nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held at the Chateaugay Funeral Home on Sunday, August 23 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church, Chateaugay on Monday, August 24 at 1 p.m. While Jack will be laid to rest in a place dear to his heart, where he logged hours of service – St. Patrick’s Church Cemetery -- he will be lovingly held in the arms of God. That is, when he is not out delivering messages, digging holy holes, driving heavenly vehicles, mowing lawns, and listening and giving advice. We will miss him terribly here on earth, we know we have a new Guardian Angel watching and giving counsel and comfort and for that we are blessed.
