October 15, 1934 - July 2, 2020
Carolyn Eileen LaVenture Gervais of Malone, 85, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2020. Carolyn was born to Joseph and Lucille LeRoux LaVenture on October 15, 1934. She was educated in the Ogdensburg Catholic Schools and graduated from St. Mary's Academy at the age of 16, having been selected to skip an elementary grade. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from D'Youville College Buffalo in 1955. In 1959, she married Norman M. Gervais of Malone and they raised three children -- Julie, Amy, and Jeffrey. Norman predeceased her in 2011. Together with her husband, Carolyn served the health care profession to its highest ideals for over thirty years. As a registered nurse, she was fiercely dedicated to unwavering excellence in patient care, and inspired the same dedication in the many nursing students she taught as an instructor at North Country Community College. Many of her students continue to serve Malone as nurses, and several took part in the care she received during a year of cancer treatment. Carolyn defined unconditional love for her children, their spouses, and grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter Julie Gervais and husband Jim Welke; daughter Amy Tavernier and granddaughters Hadley & Maelys Tavernier; and son Jeffrey Gervais, wife Erin Gervais, and son Sam Gervais. Son-in-law Christopher Tavernier also preceded Carolyn in death. Carolyn was beloved by all who knew her, and never happier than when she was helping others in any way possible. She shared her radiant smile and positive attitude through all of life's challenges. She played a sharp game of duplicate bridge, and led the Malone Bridge Club for many years. She immensely enjoyed the beautiful Malone Golf Course in summers. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Elks 1303, the Westville Ladies Auxiliary, and the Malone Altruians and leaves many, many devoted and loving friends in the area. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, July 7 at 2 pm at Notre Dame Church in Malone, in accordance with Carolyn's lifelong Catholic faith. Those in attendance are asked to observe social distancing and use of facial coverings. Burial will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Lake Titus Rd., Malone. Donations in her memory can be directed to American Cancer Society or the Alice Hyde Hospital Auxiliary.
