October 14, 1932 - June 19, 2020
Charles G. “Charlie” Cheyne was welcomed into the arms of our Heavenly Father on June 19, 2020. Born in Chateaugay, NY on October 14, 1932, he was the son of C. Harold and Geraldine (Barnes) Cheyne. Charles was raised in Chateaugay and graduated from Chateaugay High School in 1951. Charles co-owned and operated the Gazalley and Cheyne Department Store with Silas Gazalley, which was located on Main Street in Chateaugay for many years. In 1953 Charles enlisted in the United States Army where he served our country as Sergeant until 1955 when he was honorably discharged. After leaving the army, Charles worked at ALCOA in Massena for several years. He also worked for Bob Lyng at Malone Lincoln Mercury where he found his love for cars. Charlie then opened Cheyne Motor Sales on Main Street in Chateaugay, which he owned and operated for more than 40 years until his retirement at age 73. Charles (Charlie) was best known around the community for his car dealership, infectious smile and selflessness. His car dealership was more than your typical “garage”. It was a gathering place of community, one where friends would convene on a daily basis to share stories and laughs and discuss the news over a hot cup of coffee or soda. Aside from his dedication to his family, friends and customers, Charlie was also known for his melodious whistle and singing voice. You always knew when Charlie was nearby because he would usually be whistling or singing one of his favorite tunes. Outside of work, Charlie participated in several social and community-related activities. Charles was a 64-year member of the American Legion Post 875 in Chateaugay. He was also a member of the Frontier Lodge #517 for 64 years, serving as secretary for over 50 years. He was a member of the Shriners as well as serving as a Board Trustee for the Village of Chateaugay from April 1991 to April 2014. Charlie was a very spiritual man and was a lifetime member of the Chateaugay United Methodist Church ministering as lay member and a big part of the church choir. Family meant everything to Charlie. On July 3, 1963, he married the love of his life, Muriel Ann Cook. She survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Carla (James) Hamelin of Brackettville, TX, Chandra (Scott) Henderson of Chateaugay, NY, and Christa (Frank) Miliani of Clifton Park, NY; seven grandchildren, Margaret (Aaron) Garneau of Chateaugay, NY, Jordan (Erin) Henderson of Phoenix, AZ, Katarina Hamelin of Arlington, VA, Ian (Cassandra) Henderson of Phoenix, AZ, Owen Henderson of Chateaugay, NY, Anthony and Talia Miliani of Clifton Park, NY; and four great granddaughters, Lily and Ella Garneau and Charlotte and Nora Henderson; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Gertrude Nichols. A graveside service will be held on July 2, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. at Eastside Cemetery. Due to the current health crisis, those in attendance are asked to observe social distancing and use of facial coverings. A celebration of Charlie’s life will continue at the Chateaugay American Legion after the burial. All are welcome to attend. Donations in Charlie’s memory may be made to the Chateaugay United Methodist Church, The Shriners and The Masons.
