Frances Eleanor Whalen (nee Blow), 77, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 6, 2017 at Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, New York. She was born on June 27, 1939 in Malone, New York to Kenneth and Dorothea (Gillen) Blow. She attended and graduated from Chateaugay Central School in 1957. On July 8, 1957, she was united in marriage to Walter Whalen at St. Patrick’s Church in Chateaugay, New York. Frances was a devout Catholic and communicant of St. Patrick’s Church in Chateaugay and St. Jude’s Church in Brainardsville until its closing. She was also a member of the Chateaugay Church Council. She was proudly employed by the United States Post Office for 35 years. She was Post Master of the Chateaugay office from 1997 until her retirement. She was an avid sports fan, swimmer, and lover of all things sweet. She adored her fat cat, Taz, who loved her just as much. Frances will be reunited in heaven with her parents; brother Jim Clarke; beloved son Alan Whalen and grandson Stephen Whalen. She is survived by her husband, Walter; two sons and three daughters, Wayne Whalen of Chateaugay, New York, Sherry Whalen of Nokomis, Florida, Mary Defayette of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Elizabeth Harrigan and Stephen Whalen of Brainardsville, New York. She also leaves behind many grandchildren and a couple of great-grandchildren, Tyler Harrigan, Brent Harrigan, Scott Dickson, Zachary Harrigan, Kristy Cymbrak, Danielle Smith, Alan Milford, Clay Defayette, Kaylee Whalen, Gavin Harrigan and Cohan Harrigan. Besides her descendants, she left two sisters, a brother and a sister-in-law behind, Dorothy Dane of Annadale, Virginia, Mary LeMieux of Amsterdam, New York and Kenneth and Sheila Dwyer of Waterford, New York. There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Church in Chateaugay on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Her burial will be May 20, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Brainardsville Cemetery with a reception following at the Brainardsville Family Center (St. Jude’s Church). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Chateaugay Fire Department. The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and aides at Alice Hyde Medical Center for their tender care of our beloved Frances.
