September 6, 1918 - January 6, 2022
M. Deniege LaBarre, 103, formerly of Chateaugay Lake passed away Thursday, January 6, 2022 at the Clinton County Nursing Home, Plattsburgh surrounded by her family. Born on September 6, 1918 in Saint-Etienne, Canada, she was the daughter of Felix and Emma (Vieu) Picard. In 1929, the Picard’s relocated their 12 children to Chateaugay, NY where they opened a bakery. Deniege could often be found bagging the freshly made bread at the family business. At the age of 18, Deniege met her forever dance partner, Lester LaBarre, at a dance in Chateaugay. The well-paired dancers married at St. Patrick’s Church, on June 28, 1942. They would continue dancing together any chance they got for the next 64 years, Lester predeceased her on January 29, 2007. The couple purchased the LaBarre Farm on the North Road in Ellenburg Center in 1952, they ran the farm until it was destroyed by a fire in 1958. It was then that they started LaBarre's Excavation and Deniege, who had learned to sew from her mother, a master seamstress, went to work at Tru-Stitch in Malone. She took great pride in her work, and recalls sewing many collars on the shirts over the years. In 1978 the couple started spending their winters in New Port RIchey, Florida. They quickly found interest in new activities while in FL, such as shuffleboard, pool aerobics, riding their 3-wheeled bikes, playing cards and sunny walks, all while continuing to dance any chance they got. During the summer months Deniege could be found feeding her ducks at camp on Chateaugay Lake or attending mass over at Saint Anne’s Shrine in Isle La Motte with family. In 2012, at the age of 94, Deniege moved into Breezy Acres, in Ellenburg Corners, where she enjoyed spending time with friends while working on puzzles. No birthday celebration was complete without having Jell-O Shots, some may even say this was the key to living such a long life and as the years went by Deniege would be sure to let everyone know “It’s not easy”. Deniege is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Jeremiah Leary of The Villages, FL, Margaret and Gilbert Snide of The Villages, FL, Connie Tourville and her fiancé, Edward Koss of Chateaugay Lake; a daughter-in-law, Sandra LaBarre and her companion, Joseph Robare of Churubusco; ten grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents; a son, Gerald LaBarre; a son-in-law, Jerry Tourville; a great grandson, Nicholas Lines; five brothers, Ubald, Gerald, Charles, Lucien and Real Picard; six sisters, Germaine Reid, M. Cecile Demarse, Margaret LaVarnway, Lucille Jarvis, Rita Murphy and Gertrude Murray. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church, Chateaugay in the Spring. Spring burial will be held in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Chateaugay. Donations in Deniege’ s memory may be made to Breezy Acres/Memorial, in memory of Deniege LaBarre, 28 Glenns Way, Ellenburg Center, NY 12934.
