May 28, 1928 - December 12, 2017
Malcolm Gaines Hoy, 89 of Brainardsville, died Wednesday, December 12, 2017 at the Alice Center in Malone. He was born in Brainardsville on May 28, 1928, the son of Ralph and Gretchen (Hamlin) Hoy. Mr. Hoy was a graduate of Franklin Academy in Malone. After graduation, he worked for several years in Texas, where he married Ellen Simmons. He then moved to Pennsylvania where he became an aluminum-welding specialist at the Aluminum Company of America’s plant in New Kensington. During his years there, he was honored by the company for two patents he developed to solve difficult welding jobs. Brainardsville was always dear to Mr. Hoy’s heart and he and his wife and two sons, Douglas and Steven, spent their summer vacations there in an aluminum-sided home he built beside the Chateaugay River across from the site where his great grandfather had built a sawmill in 1882. Before moving to the Alice Center, he and his family enjoyed many years in their home beside the river. An active member of the United Methodist Church, Mr. Hoy was always ready to use his skills to do whatever was needed to keep up the property. Mr. Hoy made friends wherever he was, whether it was a fellow passenger on a plane or the men replacing the bridge over the river near his home. When Bill’s Bait and Beer opened in Brainardsville, he enjoyed attending daily coffee gatherings there to take part in lively conversations with his brother and many friends. Survivors include his wife, Ellen; two sons, Douglas, of Malone, NY, and Steven on Huntingdon, PA; three sisters, Jeanne Dible, of Lafayette, IN, Joanne O’Roark, of Santa Barbara, CA, and Janet Sterling, of Vernon, CT; five nephews, Marvin Hoy of Chateaugay Lake, NY, Christopher Dible, of Santa Barbara, CA, Jeffrey Dible, of Indianapolis, IN and James O’Roark, of San Juan Capistrano, CA; and nine nieces, Karen Secore, of Santa Barbara, CA, Carolyn Bagley, of Santa Barbara, CA, Betsy Cambareri of Orange Cove, CA, Cynthia Wasserman, of Wethersfield, CT, Susan Shearer, of Ft. Mill, SC, Valerie Scribano, of Rocky Hill, CT and Pamela Stevens, of Granby, CT. He is predeceased by both his parents, Ralph and Gretchen (Hamlin) Hoy and two brothers, Marshall Dare Hoy and Will Hoy. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held in the summer. Burial will take place at Brainardsville Cemetery, Brainardsville. Arrangements are with the Chateaugay Funeral Home. Online condolences may be offered at www.chateaugayfuneralhome.com.
