Mr. Richard "Dick" G. Gardner
July 1, 1939 - April 10, 2022
Richard G. Gardner “Dick”, 82, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late Frances (Bassford) Gardner and Leonard and Gail (Roberts) Gardner. Born in Brainardsville, NY on July 1, 1939, Dick graduated from Nott Terrace High School in Schenectady in 1957. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps until 1961. As a young man, Dick was a construction worker on the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Adirondack Northway, fondly recalling his work on the “most scenic part” between exits 29 and 30. He was also an auto mechanic, working in Latham at Keeler Motor Car. In 1974, Dick began a 25-year career as a NYS corrections officer at locations across the state including Green Haven, Dannemora and Lyon Mountain, where he retired in 1999. Dick was predeceased by his wife, Beverly. He is survived by his children: Kathryn (Doug) Hollinger, James Gardner, Joseph (JoEllen) Gardner, and Adam Gardner; a brother, James Bohland; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several cousins. Per Dick’s request, there will be no calling hours. Instead, the family will host a gathering in July in the North Country where Dick spent most of his life. A private interment will be held at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. The family extends its gratitude to the caring nursing staff at CVPH R5 in Plattsburgh and to staff of the Farrar Home in Malone. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dick’s memory can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
