Robert J. Cheyne, 89, formerly of Brainardsville died Wednesday, December 12,2012 at the Franklin County Nursing Home, Malone, NY, where he had been a resident since November 1. Born in Bellmont, NY on March 21,1923, he was the son of Wilroy and Alta (Taubenatimer) Cheyne. He was married to Nellie Crawford on June 10, 1945 in Chateaugay. Robert graduated from Chateaugay High School with the Class of 1939. He owned and operated a dairy farm in Bellmont for many years, was employed by Malone Concrete, later with Franklin County Highway Dept as a driver. In 1987 he and his wife moved to Tennesse, where he was employed by Portland Parks, TN and U.S.A. Steel. Upon his retirement in November 1998 they returned to make their home in Brainardsville. He also served as Bellmont Town Justice for 34 Years. Mr. Cheyne was a member of Brainardsville United Methodist Chuch, and former member of Frontier Lodge #517 of Free and Accepted Masons. Robert is survived by his wife of 67 years; four children, Kitty Bessette and her husband, William of New Rochelle, NY, Bonnie Barnes and her husband, Bruce"Skip" of Plano, TX, Wilroy Cheyne and his wife, Nancy of Gallatin, TN, Barry Cheyne and his wife, Jeanne of Woodbridge, VA; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-greandchildren; a sister-in-law, Doris Cheyne of Day, FL; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Jennie Lepper and Gladys Peets; five brothers, Clayton, George , Ellsworth, Gerald and Jacob"Mike"Cheyne . Calling hours will be held at the Chateaugay Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 14 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A funeral service will be at 1 pm on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 in the Brainardsville United Methodist Church with Rev. Marty Connor officiating. Burial will take place at Brainardsville Cemetery, Brainardsville. Donations in his memory may be made to Chateaugay Rescue Squad or the North Country Animal Shelter.
