Mr. Robert George Legacy

Robert George Legacy passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at the Alice Hyde Nursing Home with his children by his side. Robert was born May 7, 1929 on the family farm in Bellmont, NY. He was the son of George and Elsie (Willis) Legacy. His parents predeceased him. Robert was united in marriage to Joanne (Green) Legacy on April 14, 1951 by Rev. Vernon Nichols in the Chateaugay United Methodist Church. They enjoyed 49 years together. She predeceased him on December 21, 2000. Robert is survived by nine children, six sons and three daughters: Jerry (Sue) Legacy of Burke, Bruce (Joy) Legacy of Burke, Marsha (Douglas) Cook of Braindardsville, Martha (Steven) Sauvé of Newark, NY, Wayne Legacy of Wolcott, NY, Kevin (Mary) Legacy of Chateaugay, Nancy (Brian) Swanston of Churubusco, Keith (Denise) Legacy of Burke, and Danny (Shannon) Legacy of Burke. Robert is survived by 20 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and one brother-in-law and sister -in-law, James and Flossie Green of Florida. Besides his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his brothers and their wives: Earl (June) Legacy and Douglas (Doris) Legacy. Brothers-in-laws and sister-in-laws: John (Sylvia) Green, Jane (Arnold) Smith, and a grandson Harold Jerome Legacy. Mr. Legacy attended the Jericho Country School, later attending Chateaugay Central School. Robert worked at the Grange League Federation (GLF), owned and operated the family farm, ran a gravel business, and oversaw the operation of the landfill in Belmont, NY until his retirement in 1986. After his retirement from farming he enjoyed driving school bus for Chateaugay Central School for 10 years. Robert was a member of the Masonic Lodge 517, F. & A.M, Patron of Eastern Star, and member of the Chateaugay United Methodist Church. He served on the Board of Directors for Agway Inc. and later Sysco and the Chateaugay Co-op for several years. Robert drove bus and delivered Meals on Wheels for the Burke Adult Center as well as serving on the Board. He was a 4-H Leader for the Lads & Lassies, member of the Grange Hall, and a Charter member to the Deep Ravine Hunting Club. He and his wife enjoyed snowmobiling throughout the winter months with dear friends. He also enjoyed hunting with his sons, fishing, four wheeling, playing cards, golfing, spending time with family, and going out to lunch every Thursday with his in-laws, in later years. Calling hours will be held at the Chateaugay Funeral Home on Sunday, Dec. 1 from 1 to 4 p.m. The Free and Accepted Masons will meet at 4 p.m. for their Masonic service. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 2 at the Chateaugay United Methodist Church with Rev. Marty Connor officiating. Burial will take place at Eastside Cemetery. The family would like Memorial contributions in honor of Robert and his wife, Joanne 's memory to go to Chateaugay Central School to establish a Scholarship in their memory.
