Mrs. Abbie Sorrell

Abbie Sorrell, 83, formerly of Lyon Mountain, NY, passed peacefully on January 27, 2017, at the CVPH Skilled Nursing Facility. She had been a resident there since October 2014. Born in Brandon, NY on November 15, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Harrison and Hazel (Pepper) Trippany. On July 3, 1956, she married Robert J. Sorrell, Sr. at St. Augustine’s Church in North Bangor, NY. He predeceased her on May 5, 2003. She was a graduate of Brushton High School. Abbie was a woman of deep faith and the heart and soul of her family. Her signature gifts were a zest for life, an adventuresome spirit, a fierce independence and a strong work ethic. She laughed often and loved greatly. She will be remembered as a loving, compassionate wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and a wonderful friend. Abbie was a gifted, artistic seamstress, known for her beautiful handiwork – embroidery, quilting, crafts and clothing. She was also an exceptional gardener. Her talents were not limited to the harvest; she preserved and canned, enabling her many family members and friends to enjoy her bounty all year. Her culinary skills will be missed by many, as will the simple joy of eating, laughing and sharing one of Abbie’s home cooked meals. She loved to travel and enjoyed several pilgrimages, journeying to Rome, Fatima, Lourdes, Medjugorje and Guadelupe. She was a parishioner of St. Bernard’s Church in Lyon Mountain. She taught catechism class for over 20 years and was a former Regent and member of the Catholic Daughters, Court of Our Lady of Snows. Other memberships include the American Legion Auxiliary, Merry Minstrels, Senior Citizens and the Lyon Mountain Mining and Railroad Museum. The family wishes to acknowledge its gratitude to the CVPH SNF family for its kind, loving and compassionate care. She is survived by six children, Barbara Sorrell of Delmar, NY, Robert Sorrel Jr. of Merrill, NY, William Sorrell and his life companion, Robert Smith of Richmond, VA, Bonnie Sorrell Relation and her husband, Jerry J. Relation II of Chazy Lake, NY, Peter Sorrell and his wife Pamela of Altona, NY, James Sorrell and his wife, Cheryl of Brushton, NY; grandchildren, Peter Sorrell II and his wife, Amanda of Lyon Mountain, Amanda Kokaram and her husband Kavishti of California, Karlie Spurdens and her husband, Keanan of Massachusetts, Justin Sorrell of Mooers, Jacob Relation of Lake City, FL, Dana Relation of Scranton, PA, Jesse Sorrell of Plattsburgh, NY, Kevin, Eian and Paul Scully of Canada, Michael McCargar and Missy McCargar of Brushton; a great-granddaughter, Bailee Sorrell; a sister, Mary Trumble of Burke, NY; many beloved nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law, Nancy Seymour, Rita Bushey, Helen Warren, Donna Goodrow and Sandra Grubbs. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a grandson, Jason Sorrell; two brothers, Joseph and Lawrence Trippany; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Calling hours will be held at St. Bernard’s Church, Lyon Mountain on Tuesday, Jan. 31 from 2 to 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at 4 p.m. in St. Bernard’s Church with Rev. Thomas Higman officiating. Following the Mass, a reception will be held at the Lyon Mountain American Legion. Spring burial will take place at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Lyon Mountain. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Bernard’s Church or Sorrell-Woodward American Legion Post 1623.
