Ms. Betsy Theresa Hughes

It is with great sadness that the family of Betsy Theresa Hughes, our beloved sister, sister-in-law and Aunt passed away May 12, 2026. Betsy was born July 23, 1963, the daughter of Wm. “Jake” and Muriel Bonner Hughes. Betsy was a person born with Down Syndrome. If you were fortunate enough to have known Betsy, you would have met a very polite, friendly and loving young lady. She was entrusted to the Sunmount/Mountain Lake Services at a young age, living mostly in the Keeseville, Port Henry area where she had many housemates and caregivers whom she loved very much. She was an accomplished basket maker, whose wares were greatly received by family and community members alike. If there was an event in the area, she was up for the adventure to participate as long as there was a cup of coffee to be had. In her younger years, she participated in the Special Olympics, receiving many medals, mostly in running track. She also enjoyed bowling and swimming in her brother and sister-in-law’s pool. Her special joy was in listening, singing and dancing to Elvis and Michael Jackson. Thanks to the staff at her homes in Port Henry and Moriah, NY, Betsy was able to attend many Elvis impersonator shows. Her favorite was James Cawley from that area. She along with her housemates were able to visit Graceland (twice), Universal Studios and local spas and restaurants. Betsy also enjoyed her holiday visits with her family in Malone. She is survived by her brother, Brent; sister-in-law, Sue Hughes; nieces, Carrie Lynn Hankins (Bill), Janelle Pachter (Jay), Michelle Sullivan (Larry). She is also survived by her nephews, Fred Hughes (Aly) and Todd Steenberge, along with many great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, Jake and Muriel Hughes; brothers, Bryan and Billy; aunts, uncles and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at a later date and announced then. The family would like to thank everyone who helped Betsy in her life journey. The names who have impacted Betsy’s life are too numerous to mention, but the family is enormously grateful. The staff and roommates at the Broad Street and Moriah homes were her best friends, especially Heidi and Maria. We can’t thank you enough.
